Unit inconsistency is one of the most common sources of errors in engineering — the loss of the Mars Climate Orbiter in 1999 is a famous example caused by metric/imperial unit confusion. This tool performs precise conversion across 12 different quantity classes (length, area, volume, mass, force, pressure, energy, power, torque, flow rate, speed, temperature).
All conversion factors are based on the definitions in NIST Special Publication 811 (the SI unit system guide). Temperature conversion differs from the others: it’s an affine (offset-including) transformation, not a scaled (multiplicative) one — so it’s calculated with a separate formula.
Practical tip: before starting a complex calculation, get in the habit of converting all your inputs to SI units (meter, kilogram, second, Pascal, Joule…). This greatly reduces the risk of a unit error in intermediate steps.
